The HRC South Florida Federal Club presented its first-ever northern Palm Beach County reception on September 10th thanks to the generosity of long-time HRC supporter Paul Horn of Jupiter.
The evening’s special guests were Kirk Rice, HRC’s Senior Major Gifts Officer for Florida, and Allison Herwitt, HRC’s Legislative Director, who shared details of HRC’s election year efforts, especially HRC’s work on the Obama/Biden Campaign, on Florida’s discriminatory Amendment 2, on the California Marriage Amendment, and on several South Florida Congressional races.
Allison’s comments triggered a frank discussion about the pressing need for everyone who cares about equality to be active in this fall’s campaign, whether this means donating to candidates, writing letters to the editor, driving friends to the polls on election day, or explaining in plain terms to those who care for us why this election is so significant to our lives. With only 40 days remaining until the November election it is “now or never” time in the struggle to prevent Florida’s discriminatory Amendment 2 from becoming a permanent part of our state’s Constitution.
On September 21st the Orlando Sentinel became the 11th major Florida newspaper to editorialize against Amendment 2’s passage, and recently the Broward County School Board passed a resolution opposing the amendment. Several municipalities in South Florida and elsewhere in the state appear poised to do the same.
Additionally, various polls continue to show that approximately 58% of Floridians support the amendment, meaning that support continues to fall a few points short of the 60% needed for passage. But this shortfall is well within each poll’s margin of error.
Because Florida is such a large state, it’s broadcast media which will make the difference on whether we have a state Constitution which singles out our community for discrimination This means that fully funding the campaign is now the key to winning. Read More »
This November, Florida voters will vote on Amendment 2, which seeks to amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man
and a woman only and prohibit recognition of any other legal union that is the “substantial equivalent” of marriage. Florida law already prohibits recognition of marriages by gay or lesbian couples—the proposed amendment would write that discriminatory ban into the constitution and its broad wording would also ban civil unions and likely domestic partnerships as well.
One positive factor: supporters of the amendment need to garner 60% of the vote this November in order to pass Amendment 2. Recent polling suggests that the vote will be very close—57% were found to support Amendment 2, with 36% opposed.
Two campaigns, SayNo2 and Fairness for All Families have formed to oppose the discriminatory amendment.
